| Control measures rolled out as coconut farms in Tayabas City face pest damage (Quezon PIO) |
TAYABAS CITY, Quezon - Infestation by beetles and weevils has affected around 100 coconut trees in Barangay Ibabang Nangka, Tayabas City, based on initial checks by agriculture workers in the area. Control steps are now in place as the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist acts on reports from farmers.
The Coconut Development Division conducted a pest check on April 16, 2026 after farmers reported a rise in pest activity in the barangay. The inspection confirmed the presence of rhinoceros beetle, locally known as uang, and Asiatic palm weevil in affected trees.
Results of the inspection guided the next steps taken in the affected farms. The type of pests found helped determine what actions were needed and how quickly they had to be done.
Authorities distributed pesticides to coconut farmers in the barangay as part of the initial response. Farmers were told to keep a close watch on their trees and look out for early signs of damage.
Efforts are focused on stopping the spread of pests to nearby coconut farms in the area. Coordination with farmers continues as part of efforts to protect coconut production across Quezon Province.
