Six students brought pride to the country after winning at the 58th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in July 2017 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. IMO is considered to be the Olympics of Mathematics and is the grandest stage of Math competitions for high school students all over the world.

Dr. Richard Eden, the leader of the Philippine delegate to IMO, hopes that more Filipinos will know that that the country has a pool of talented students, who have been excelling in Mathematics, and are able to compete – and win – against the best of the world in the IMO.

The six students, namely: Sean Anderson Ty, Clyde Wesley Ang, Albert John Patupat, Shaquille Wyan Que, Kyle Patrick Dulay, and Farell Eldrian Wu, who competed with more than 600 other contestants, brought home three silver and three bronze medals. Ty, who hails from Zamboanga, was the first medalist in the IMO from outside Luzon.

“I got to meet a lot of like-minded people who share the same passion for Math as I do, and I exceeded my expectations by winning a bronze medal. I’m happy to have represented my country in such a prestigious competition, and I hope to do so again in the future,” Ty said.

This victory maintains the Philippines’ rank of 17 out of 111 countries from six continents. The Philippines’ ranking is higher than Hong Kong, Canada, France, Germany, and Australia.

For Eden, these students deserve more recognition so that they may inspire other young Filipinos to pursue Math and the other sciences.

The Philippine team was being supported by HARI Foundation and Manulife Business Processing Services. (AVS/ARB-PIA)
