LUCENA CITY – As part of the celebration of Feb. as ‘Buwan ng Sining’ (Month for the Arts), 24 members of Quezon Artists Guild (QAG) have mounted an exhibit of their artworks which kicked off on Feb. 19 and runs up to Mar. 3.
Dubbed ‘Ani ng Sining’, the exhibit - showcasing 65 pieces of various artworks by young and veteran artists - is being presented by the provincial government of Quezon and Konseho ng Herencia ng Lucena.
Led by Vladimir Nieto of Lucena city who is also the president of Konseho ng Herencia ng Lucena, Noel Bueza of Lucban, and Frank Caña of Calauag, the exhibit is held at the groundfloor lobby of the provincial capitol building here and is visited daily by students, arts enthusiasts and potential buyers.
Bueza, a multimedia artist who acts as president of QAG, said they have about 50 members all over the province but only 24 have joined the present exhibit and only 3 are full time artists of the 24 participants.
Bueza has several artworks in the exhibit which included a wood and metal sculpture entitled ‘Harimanok’ and fetches P120,000 and pen and ink paintings of the late president Manuel Luis Quezon and the provincial capitol building, among others.
He said that many of their QAG members are hobbyists but other members include young students, teachers, businessmen and even a policeman.
Caña who has retired from the world of advertising having spent 13 years in J. Romero and Associates advertising agency in Makati as a design and art director, decided to quit in 2010 to do full time as a painter. His artworks in the exhibit include the abstract ‘Kaleidoscope’ and semi-abstract ‘Barong-barong’ which is a more detailed rendition of a simple nipa hut and both done in oil pastel.
Nieto made 2 contributions in the exhibit titled ‘Magtataho’ and ‘Magtatain’ also done in oil pastel while Aann Reynales, a very promising young artist from Lopez, displayed her artistic rendition of an Aeta child titled ‘Bihug’ and a mother and child painting titled ‘Ang Pieta sa Kalsada ng Lopez’ inspired by a real tandem of mother and child beggars always sitting on a roadside in her hometown.
Other artists in the exhibit include Avie Lafuente of Tayabas city, Austin Llena of Quezon, Buhay Mendoza and Joel Reglos of Calauag, Yana Nieto of Lucena city, August Tazon of Dolores, Roma Valdez of Sariaya, Mel Valencia, Lhane Arenque, Japeth Buñag and Apolinario Folloso of Lopez, Tristan Bamba of Mauban, Christian de Castro of Tiaong, Rigor Esguerra and Sherwin Gonzales of Baler, and Mario Madridejos, Renato Palad, Rez Cada, Percival Canuel and Ayelah Deveza, all of Lucban town, considered as the art capital of Quezon province.
Other young but already versatile artists of Quezon are Maria Pureza Escaño of Sariaya and Erick Dator of Lucban, who both have made a name for themselves as artists in the national and in the international scenes but are not members of QAG.
