GENERAL TRIAS CITY, Cavite – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has announced the closure of the Tejero bridge here for its five-month repair and maintenance beginning Aug. 4 this year.

Engineer Ade Igna, DPWH-Cavite assistant provincial director, said the 50-year-old steel bridge needs rehabilitation to ensure its integrity and safety of the motorists.

"I am appealing to our constituents and motorists and apologize for the temporary inconvenience caused during the repair works and heavy traffic at the Tejero bridge. Rest assured, the safety of the public and all motorists is paramount," Igna said.

He said the widened section of the bridge may still be used during the five-month rehabilitation period.

Tejero bridge is a vital link between General Trias to adjacent towns of Tanza, Naic, Maragondon, Ternate up to Nasugbu, Batangas via the Kabiang Tunnel.

Meanwhile, Engr. June Dimapilis of the Tanza Traffic Management Bureau advised motorists to use alternative routes and allot extra time with the expected traffic due to the road repair.

"The two-outer cemented bridges constructed five years ago are still open and passable to motorists,” Dimapilis said.

Noel Morena, City Traffic Bureau chief, said motorists coming from General Trias can either use the Bukal-Pasong Kawayan road or the Governor's Drive route from Trece Martires City going to Naic road.

The two-outer cemented section of the Tejero bridge was constructed five years ago in anticipation of the five-month repair, according to City Mayor Mayor Antonio Ferrer.

Ferrer said motorists can also use the Tejero-Bacao road during the bridge repair.

Motorists welcomed the DPWH’s move to repair the bridge.

“I just have to allot extra time to avoid being late at work during the rehabilitation of the bridge,” Victoria La Serna, a regular motorist passing by the bridge, told the Philippine News Agency. (PNA)
