LUCENA CITY - The much-awaited coronavirus desease (COVID-19) Bio-Safety Diagnostic Laboratory 2+ was inaugurated this morning as a signal of its formal opening to the public at Lucena United Doctors Hospital (LUDHMC) in this City.

Quezon Governor Danilo Suarez, City Mayor Roderick Alcala, Vice- Governor Samuel Nantes led the ceremony along with some local health and hospital officials.

The activity was preceeded by a mass led by Diocese of Lucena Bishop Mel Rey Uy.

The establishment of COVID-19 testing laboratory is a joint project of the provincial and city governments aimed at speeding up the testing process on suspected COVID-19) carriers in the city and the province.

The project was recently approved by the Department of Health (DOH) days after Suarez, Alcala, and Dr. Gerardo Carmelo Salazar, president of LUDHMC signed a Memorandum of Agreement for the establishment of the BSL-2+ laboratory.

With its operation, Alcala said the city and the province now have another reference laboratory aside from Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) in Muntinlupa City.

"For now, the BSL-2+ laboratory will have an initial capacity of 48 tests per day", said Alcala in a phone interview.
