LUCENA CITY - On Monday, several individuals and groups set up community pantries in various areas of Quezon Province, joining the nationwide movement of sharing basic and essential goods among Filipinos during COVID-19.

The movement, which began in Quezon City and quickly spread to other areas in Metro Manila and other regions, has now spread to Quezon Province.

Photos of free food packs, vegetables, and health items displayed on sidewalks by kind-hearted Quezonians and their donors have been shared on social media.

Here's a look at some of the community pantries:

The pantries “Let's Love Community Pantry” was opened in Barangay Lumingon, Tiaong, Quezon on April 17 initiated by businesswoman and charity worker Ms. Letlet Umali Lector.

"Welcome po ang lahat, kahit saang barangay o bayan ka pa nanggaling, hangga't may available pa po tayong items sa ating community pantry," says netizen Letlet Lector.

Soon, the Community Pantry ng Lucena by Former Board Member Vincent Dominic Reyes and Chiara Rose Alquiros with their friends opened on April 18 located at the Arenal Building, Granja St, Barangay 1, Lucena City, where they also accept monetary and in-kind donations.

On April 19 the Community Pantry ng Lucena said they were able to collect P 24, 000 plus a large donation of fresh fruit and vegetables from the donors.

According to Reyes, one of the good samaritans who donated to him was Ceasar, a vegetable vendor in Sariaya's town market that despite his low social status, gave him 5 kilos of okra and 5 kilos of pechay.

“Sir (Dominic) itong limang kilo ng okra ko, tawad ko na sayo. Saka itong limang kilo ng pechay. Pasensya na kayo hindi na ito kagandahan pero baka may makinabang pa. Isama niyo na rin dyan. Wala rin kami pero ang alam ko pag ang biyaya ibinabahagi, bumabalik pa ng mas marami.” Ceasar said.

Reyes said all donations are used to buy vegetables, groceries, rice, and any other items people need that they can put in the pantry.

“It’s like our way of bayanihan during this health crisis,” says Tayabas resident Dubhe Mayor.

Dubhe Mayor, Vice President for Membership of Sinag Quezon, said 'Bayanihan ngayong pandemic' when he started the 'inspired' Maginhawa Community Pantry in Tayabas City.

With the launch of such an initiative, many residents admired and extended their help, and in response to Sustainable Development Goal 2 or No Hunger, this initiative aims to meet the basic needs of some citizens in a simple way.

The people behind Sinag Quezon are accepting in-kind donations, including pet food, and are in need of rice, canned goods, noodles, and vegetables.

This community pantry of Sinag Quezon has currently opened 4 community pantries, one in Ilang Ilang Basketball Court, Zaballero Subd, Barangay Gulang Gulang, Lucena City, Sitio Ibaba, Barangay May-it Manasa, Lucban, Quezon, Daliz st. Cor. Gala St. Sariaya, Quezon, and Conversion of St. Paul Parish (Patio) Barangay Maaliw Pitogo, Quezon.

They said this community pantry will remain open for those who wish to help or extend assistance.

A Lucban Artists Guild also set up a community pantry at Janzen Art Cafe, in Lucban, Quezon.

"Laging iisipin, ang pangangailangan ng susunod sa atin," read the posters mounted beside the pantry.

They also accept school supplies donations and other things for the kids.

Meanwhile, more community pantries have been set up around Lucena City and other parts of Quezon Province.

One is located Osmena St., Barangay 3 Lucena City, in front of Maryhill College Main Gate opened by Maryhill College HED Alumni Association in partnership with Circle K Club, RACMC and MCCO.

Another one is at Purok Greenhills in Brgy. Marketview Subd, Lucena City opened by Ms. Maria Luisa Reyes, which is giving out mainly vegetables such as squash, eggplant, cabbage, sayote and okra.

A youth group based in Zoleta St. Brgy. Ilayang Iyam, Lucena City (beside Lucena West I Elementary School) in Quezon province has also set up its own community pantry, replicating the idea that has taken off in many other neighborhoods across the country.

The organizer, Czedrick Faller said he is inspired by Angel Locsin, he said they will buy the supply from local farmers and businesses around Lucena so that they can also help them.

Even Barangay Dalahican Purok 2 residents were inspired by the movement. The pantry set up in the Barangay Dalahican area aims to help residents affected by the new restrictions as not a lot of tourists are coming to the beach.

A young entrepreneur Ana Patricia Non opened the country's first community pantry on Maginhawa Street in Quezon City.

The Maginhawa Community Pantry, on the other hand, closed on April 13 due to alleged red-tagging among volunteers.

According to reports there are 350 and counting community pantries have opened all over the country.
