Declining cases of Covid-19 in the Province of Quezon

Beginning June 29, as of 5:00 pm report, the number of active cases in the province went down below 1K. As of July 20, with 5:00 pm cut-off time, the active cases were recorded at 744, 300 cases below the June 28 record of 1,024 cases.

Lucena City shooting at a high of 285 on June 16, from zero cases on May 19, this year, represents a 285% increase. Today, the figure is gradually coming down and just recorded 197 cases as of 5 pm. Notable in this analysis is that whenever Lucena’s active cases went up cases of big municipalities went up as well. Candelaria, Tayabas, and Sariaya are exchanging places for the second runner-up. This means that overcrowding in the highly populated urban centers contributes to a sudden surge of the virus.

As in the case of Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia when infections were under control, misjudgment, and over-confident governments were highly-praised by media, letting their guards down and not doing a pre-advance vaccine negotiation took a heavy beating when Delta variant suddenly went berserk.

With the Delta variant insisting itself to make a dent in Quezon, the local IATF must apply the maximum restrictions it can adopt to stop its track. We, in Quezon, cannot let the Delta variant take hold of a single Quezonian else the only pubic hospital that we all depend on will be overwhelmed with patients. There is a possibility of private hospitals not accepting Covid-19 Delta variant cases and might provide hundreds of excuses. This includes legitimate reasons such as endangering their regular non-covid patients and the lack of medical health manpower and facilities.

We have to be very vigilant on these emerging variants. Seemingly the variants immunity are improving against the present crop of anti-viral drugs. We don’t have an answer yet on why these variants keep evolving. The latest 8 Delta variant patients who have undergone a 14-day quarantine tested positive again. Unlike the Spanish flu of 1918, the rapidly mutating virus do not exhibit a character that of natural selection where highly infectious ones are not that lethal compared to highly lethal but not highly transmissible.

If ever Delta surges, aside from attaining herd immunity through vaccination which is still far from being realized, shelter-in-place is again the best option for all of us. We have to postpone mobility like those unnecessary travel to NCR and other provinces in the CALABARZON area. If travel cannot be avoided, wear face-mask and face shield and the other protocols which are actually the new normal. LET THE SPIRIT OF GOD PASS and wait for his wrath to subside by constantly praying and like the 1918 pandemic, Covid-19 shall ULTIMATELY die down.
