LUCENA CITY - Secretary of Department Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Roy A. Cimatu recently paid a personal visit to selected field offices in Quezon province to focus on the implementation of the agency's various priority programs.

In Quezon province, the secretary emphasized the implementation of the stronger focus on enforcement and the National Greening Program.

“Ang priority natin ay magtanim ng puno at protektahan ito” said Sec. Cimatu.

He also stated that the country's Provincial ENR Offices and Community ENR Offices play an important role in the implementation of our environmental laws and priority programs.

According to the Philippine Forest Statistics released by the Forest Management Bureau in 2020, the province of Quezon has the largest forest cover in the whole of CALABARZON, with 228,024 hectares or more than 80% of the region's forest cover.

According to DENR CALABARZON Regional Executive Director Nilo B. Tamoria, the survival rate of NGP implementation in Quezon Province is at 65%.

Cimatu also acknowledged the initiative of Honorable Quezon Provincial Governor Danilo E. Suarez in having 24 sanitary landfills in the province as well as maintaining good quality rivers in the province at the Class A and B levels.

“Makikita natin ang galing ng isang namumuno kapag kaya nitong pamahalaan ang Solid Waste Management System sa kanyang nasasakupan”, said Sec. Cimatu.

He also continued to praise the leadership of PENRO Quezon and CENRO Tayabas,

“I am very much impressed by your performance as the DENR here in this province,” the Secretary said.

Despite this, Cimatu continues to urge the intensified implementation of environmental laws to prevent illegal tree felling, as well as the implementation of Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act to prevent the spread of waste.

Before March this year, DENR CALABARZON in collaboration with the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) 4A was able to close four open dumpsites in the region. Two of them are in Batangas, and one each in Cavite and Quezon.

Cimatu's visit was attended by Undersecretary for Enforcement Benito T. De Leon, DENR CALABARZON RED Nilo B. Tamoria, Quezon Provincial Governor Honorable Danilo E. Suarez, DENR Quezon PENR Officer Cyril A. Coliflores, and DENR Tayabas CENR Officer Raymond A. Rivera.

Meanwhile, the Solid Waste Management Division of the City General Services Office in the person of SWMD Supervising Head Marek Tabernilla received a Composter Set from the Department of the Environment and Natural Resources - Environmental Management Bureau Calabarzon.

Such equipment is capable of loading a ton of compost with a biodegradable shredder.

The department’s donation to the division also included six boxes of enzymes weighing 61liters each.

These enzymes will be used in the processing of compost soil enhancer.

As Tabernilla shared in an interview, this gift of equipment from DENR-EMB Calabarzon is part of its Solid Waste Management Assistance throughout the region.

The SWMD Supervising Head added that the department also provided the division with P150 thousand in financial assistance which is currently under the care of the City Council for making a resolution in this regard.

The Solid Waste Management Division of the City General Services Office under the supervision of its chief Alyssa Mijares are just a few in the entire province of Quezon that have received such assistance from the DENR.
