LUCENA CITY - Councilor Rolden Garcia, 25, embodies an authentic leader who harnesses people's consensus in solving problems, even giving the common tao a hand in governance. Trapos would be appalled at his approach to politics that involve true people power.

"People demand so much from government. But if you can tap the same people for governance, we have to include the people in governance.

"If you know how to complain, you should also know how to offer solutions. Hindi puwedeng reklamo lang nang reklamo," he states in a recent Cool 105.1 broadcast of Sentinel Times on Air.

He deems his stint as Sangguniang Kabataan head as a workplace of reality, allowing him to reach out, touch, even make a difference in the lives of people-- not just the youth constituency.

To bolster employment for the youth sector, he has touched base with the provincial capitol, the Department of Labor & Employment, and TESDA in a bid to create or find job openings, albeit short-term, for the youth.

As national president of the Kabataan Kontra Droga at Terorismo, he had thorough exposure to the state of drug dependents throughout the land.

He affirms studies that cite pusher/users are jobless, have become wont to making a fast buck, "pero isinara na ang isip na doon na lang ang buhay nila, tinakasan ang responsibilidad."

Pushing for Senate proposal to establish rehabilitation center in every region, he suggests that rehab ought to include skills and livelihood training, psychiatric counseling, and instilling sound ethics to prep the individual to a productive life in the community and society.

Of his legislative work, Garcia states "we should be an ethical leader kasi nakikita tayo ng lahat. Dapat ka-level lang ng mamamayan, dapat nararamdaman ang pangangailangan ng taumbayan.

"Bukas tayo sa lahat at ginagamit ang position or influence para sa kapakakan ng ating kababayan," he notes.

Being SK Federation head of Lucena's 33 barangays allowed him entry to the city council to which he proposes the standardization of SK programs to dovetail with available logistics.

He is batting for turning the city's vacant lots into practicum centers for agricultural endeavors and agro-tourism sites: "Pangarap natin agri-eskuwela, with certification from TESDA.

"We have swept aside investing in the environment, in food processing, and hands-on raising of food crops. Umuunlad palayo ang teknolohiya, nalimutan na priority pa rin ang environment activities," he laments.

In case Lucena residents and oldtimers have been missing those perennial basketball leagues and beauty pageants, it's a Garcia strategy to channel additional funds "for student scholarships, medical and medication assistance to the needy.

"We are very much into sports, but we have to pay more attention to the most needful-- praktikal tayo lagi," he says.
