LUCENA CITY, Quezon - Remarkable women leaders blazed a trail toward empowerment at the Sentinel Times Women Summit 2024, held recently at the Pacific Mall Event Theater in Lucena City, Quezon. It was co-presented by the Pacific Mall, and resource speakers included prominent figures from various industries who shared their insights and experiences on how to inspire and empower women to take on leadership roles in society.

The summit's theme, "Empowered Women, Empower Women," emphasized the importance of women supporting and uplifting each other in order to create a more inclusive and equitable society. Ms. Cosmo World PH-Tourism 2023, Gezza Ilagan Avila, skillfully guided the proceedings as host.

"The Sentinel Times Women Summit aims to create a space where women can gain knowledge, inspiration, and the networks needed to reach leadership positions," said Ma. Nimfa Estrellado, owner and publisher of the Sentinel Times. "We strive to cultivate a generation of empowered female leaders ready to shape a more equitable future."

Estrellado acknowledges the challenges of organizing the summit largely on her own. However, with the help of dedicated staffs, volunteers and supporters, she successfully brought together a diverse group of women to discuss important issues and drive positive change in their communities.

"I know there are other people who are better organizers, but I do not compare myself, and that's what I learned by listening to these empowered women who are leading the way in our community," Estrellado said. "It's important to focus on the progress we are making and the positive impact we can have, rather than getting caught up in self-doubt or comparison."

"While there's always room for improvement, as the first major summit of its kind in our community, we're committed to learning and growing," Estrellado added. "Our goal is to consistently provide a platform where women can connect, collaborate, and inspire one another. This isn't about recognition or profit; it's about empowering women to make a tangible impact on our society."

The summit's impact rippled beyond the event. Participants reported feeling inspired, motivated, and equipped with the tools to pursue their leadership goals. Building on this success, the Sentinel Times plans to develop ongoing mentorship and development programs to provide continued support for women leaders in the region.

The insightful panel discussions were guided by moderators Celine Tutor and Belinda Otordoz, who skillfully facilitated engaging conversations with a distinguished group of panelists. These panelists, including Lito Giron, Flor Macale, Jay Lim, Rofel Argolida, Ruth Baldoman, and Danny Estacio, posed insightful questions that delved deeper into the key speakers' expertise and experiences.

Resource Speakers and Highlights:

Rauanne Joson is a wedding planner at FEP Events Management, a licensed financial advisor, and a radio anchor at DZEL Eagle Broadcasting Company. She has been a member of Connected Women Philippines and Kiwanis (Kalilayan), supporting the mission and advocacy of empowering women with skills and opportunities, creating opportunities for women through entrepreneurship and remote or freelance work, and improving the world one child at a time.

Her transformative journey from employee to entrepreneur and freelancer embodies the power of pursuing one's dreams. Once a store sales manager for fashion brands, she now embraces a multifaceted life as an entrepreneur and craftsperson. This woman understands the importance of time; she empowers women to take control of their destinies and fearlessly pursue their passions.

As a millennial with access to technology and boundless opportunities, she believes in the power of social media for support and connection among women. She's learned the value of a business-minded approach and strategic thinking.

Her passion lies in helping women overcome barriers to achieve personal and professional success. She sees social media as a powerful tool for empowerment and connection.

Inspired by the legacy of her father, esteemed human rights lawyer Ed Abcede, Atty. Rhaetia Marie "Sunshine" Abcede-Llaga continues the family tradition of fighting for justice. Her extensive non-profit experience and dedication to social welfare propelled her to serve as a Lucena City councilor for three terms. A graduate of the prestigious Angat Bayi Political Empowerment Fellowship, she made significant contributions as chairperson of the Committee on Social Welfare, PWDs, Senior Citizens, Women, and the Family.

Before her political career, Abcede-Llaga worked tirelessly as a social welfare advocate in the non-profit sector. Today, as elected president of Soroptimist International Lucena, she champions women's rights and gender equality, a passion evident throughout her career.

“Women, and mothers especially, possess a unique capacity for selfless love, unwavering courage, and a relentless drive to protect their families and communities. These qualities define exceptional leadership," she affirms, encouraging women to own their strength and uplift others.

Atty. Abcede-Llaga stresses that while gender equality is a constitutional right in the Philippines, challenges remain. Gender stereotypes, discrimination, and the underrepresentation of women in leadership positions continue to hinder progress. She highlights the double standard faced by women, often criticized for assertiveness that would be lauded in male leaders. Additionally, societal expectations and a lack of confidence can discourage women from pursuing positions of power.

Despite these obstacles, Atty. Abcede-Llaga maintains, "Women are ready for politics, driven by a core of selflessness." She emphasizes the need to support women in leadership for true equality.

Abcede-Llaga draws a crucial distinction between legal equality and the need for inclusive policies that empower women at all levels. She believes that achieving true gender equality demands a collaborative effort to foster a society where diversity and inclusion are celebrated by all.

She is deeply committed to giving back and making a difference. Her philanthropic efforts support various charitable causes, including education for underprivileged children and healthcare access for marginalized communities.

Despite a desire to be a boy in her youth, she has grown to love being a woman. Early motherhood presented challenges, but also opened doors to new opportunities. Her 'make it happen' mentality and belief that anyone can succeed regardless of background drives her.

Her self-described fuel is "KAPE" (the Tagalog word for coffee):

E - Enthusiasm

This positive outlook has helped her overcome obstacles and achieve her goals. She hopes to inspire others to embrace their true selves and pursue their dreams with determination and faith. She also finds daily inspiration in the Bible's 365 reminders to live fearlessly and pursue one's goals.

Leaving a teaching career behind, she embarked on an entrepreneurial journey that now includes the vibrant 27,000-member Calauag Barter Group Community, the successful Lulhu Gadgets & Accessories Shops with two branches, Lulhu Appliances Trading, and the empowering Ideal Visa Consultancy-Naga.

This belief in self-acceptance was hard-won. Sy faced pressures to conform – criticism about her appearance or marital status. Her response is powerful: "Do not let the pressure of society dictate your worth." Rejecting negativity, she found strength in embracing individuality and authenticity.

This shift in mindset fuels Sy's drive to empower others. She emphasizes self-care, rest, and encourages women to set healthy boundaries. Her openness about spending time alone –traveling, eating, or simply being– sends a message that independence and 'me time' are essential for growth.

Initially driven by necessity rather than privilege, Cadiente's dream of a law career was deferred when financial constraints led her to pursue a B.S. in Agricultural Economics at the University of the Philippines in Los Banos. Determined to support her family, she temporarily set aside her aspirations and secured stable employment.

Upon returning to the Philippines, Mary Rose boldly founded her own BPO company in Lucena City. Despite initial financial constraints, her determination inspired support. Her sister's former employer, recognizing her talent, provided vital seed funding and guidance. Through strategic scaling and sheer grit, she overcame limited resources.
