MULANAY, Quezon – To equip 35 members of the Barangay Bagupaye Coconut Farmers Association with enhanced knowledge in proper native pig management and provide them with additional income opportunities, the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian (OPV) recently conducted a "Lecture on Native Pig Management" in Mulanay, Quezon.
The lecture was spearheaded by Dr. Milcah I. Valente and Mr. Julian Nuñez from the OPV-Livestock and Poultry Development Division. Their expertise provided valuable insights into various aspects of native pig husbandry, including proper breeding techniques, disease prevention, nutrition, and housing. The participants actively engaged in discussions, asking questions and sharing their own experiences, which fostered a dynamic learning environment.
In addition to the lecture, the team also conducted profiling and validation for selected associations and agri-tourism sites in the towns of Macalelon, Pitogo, San Andres, and Agdangan. This crucial step involved gathering detailed information about their current practices, challenges, and specific needs. The data collected will be instrumental in tailoring future support programs and ensuring that interventions are relevant and effective for each group.
This initiative is part of the OPV's broader efforts to strengthen coordination with farmers' associations and agri-tourism sites across the province. By building stronger relationships and understanding the on-the-ground realities of these groups, the OPV aims to deliver more targeted and impactful services. The actual assessments conducted will provide a more concrete basis for determining the appropriate types of support and projects to further develop their livelihoods, moving beyond general assistance to provide specialized programs that truly address their unique requirements.
The training aims to empower local farmers with sustainable practices, ultimately contributing to increased household income and the overall economic well-being of the community. By improving their skills in native pig management, the farmers are expected to see improved productivity, healthier animals, and a greater return on their investment, fostering a more resilient and prosperous agricultural sector in Quezon.
