PAGBILAO, Quezon – From cleaner shores to greener farms, Pagbilao recently witnessed the tangible results of its community's dedication to building a more sustainable and food-secure future. Local officials and community members united for a coastal clean-up and a vital visitation to the LAWA at BINHI (Local Adaptation to Water Access and Breaking Insufficiency through Nutritious Harvest for the Impoverished) project in Barangay Ilayang Polo.

The day's activities saw over 50 participants, including members of the Samahan ng Mangingisda ng Ilayang Polo (SMIP) and LAWA at BINHI beneficiaries. The event was spearheaded by Rosalie Recaro, Municipal Agriculture Officer, collaborating with the Ilayang Polo Barangay Council, under the leadership of Barangay Captain Cynthia De Leon.

The morning began with a coastal clean-up, where volunteers removed plastic debris, discarded fishing gear, and other non-biodegradable waste from the Ilayang Polo shoreline. This effort aligns with the municipality's environmental advocacy to protect marine ecosystems, which are vital to Pagbilao's local economy and the livelihoods of its fishing communities.

Following the clean-up, attention shifted to the BINHI farms. Officials inspected the project's progress and held discussions with beneficiaries. Topics included challenges like water availability and pest management, as well as sustainability approaches and potential support interventions such as drought-resistant seeds and modern farming tools.

These ongoing initiatives demonstrate the local government of Pagbilao's dedication to multi-sectoral approaches. Their aim is to promote environmental sustainability, strengthen local food systems, and reinforce partnerships with stakeholders, fostering a more resilient community.
