SAN ANTONIO, Quezon – To create a cleaner, more sustainable future, the local government of San Antonio has kicked off a crucial study of the town's waste. The municipality recently wrapped up a 3-day Waste Analysis and Characterization Study (WACS), a key step in overhauling the town's solid waste management (SWM) system.
This comprehensive study was initiated with technical assistance from the PGENRO-Environmental Management Division. It was successfully carried out with the help of Designate MENROfficer Richmond Katigbak, alongside dedicated teams from households, non-household establishments, and the LGU. The collaborative effort was conducted from September 11-15, 2025.
Before the main event, the LGU held a mandatory two-day orientation for participants. The session prepared residents and business owners for the WACS. It also highlighted the importance of proper waste segregation and disposal as mandated by Republic Act 9003, the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act.
Following the orientation, the team conducted a thorough monitoring and inspection of the local sanitary landfill. This inspection was a prerequisite to the actual study and aimed to ensure the landfill's compliance with national regulations, specifically those concerning leachate treatment, proper cell covering, and gas collection.
The WACS is designed to provide the local government with the data needed to create a more efficient and sustainable SWM plan. Analyzing the types and amounts of waste being generated, the LGU can better plan for waste reduction, recycling programs, and overall disposal methods.
This data will be used to pinpoint which materials, like plastics or food waste, are most prevalent, allowing the LGU to tailor its SWM services for maximum impact. This initiative underscores the critical role of cooperation between the government and the community.
By working together, local officials, residents, and businesses can achieve the shared goal of a cleaner and safer environment. Activities like the WACS are essential for providing the foundation for improved waste management practices that will benefit the entire community for years to come.
