INFANTA, Quezon — Turning recyclable waste into rewards for students, Mayor Lord Arnel L. Ruanto led the formal launch of the Eco-Resiklo Program in Infanta through the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement with partner institutions and schools. The initiative introduces a school program that links environmental action with practical benefits for young participants.
Students are encouraged to collect recyclable materials from their homes and bring them to school during scheduled “Eco-Days,” where their contributions are measured and recorded. The activity is designed to help students understand the value of recycling while actively taking part in efforts to reduce household waste.
These materials, including plastic bottles, paper, cartons, and other reusable items, are brought to their schools during scheduled collection days known as “Eco-Days.” During Eco-Days, the recyclable items brought by students are weighed and recorded in each participant’s Eco-Savers Passbook, allowing their collected materials to be properly documented and monitored by teachers and program coordinators.
The recorded materials are then converted into points based on the amount submitted, creating a simple system that recognizes students for their recycling efforts. These points may later be exchanged for groceries or school supplies, giving students a practical incentive to practice recycling while helping their families with basic needs.
Mayor Ruanto said the program seeks to teach environmental responsibility among children at an early age, emphasizing the importance of building awareness about protecting nature while they are still young. He added that simple daily practices can help develop habits that contribute to a cleaner and more responsible community.
“Gusto nating maipakita sa mga kabataan na kahit simpleng paghihiwalay at pag-iipon ng recyclable na basura ay may malaking epekto sa ating kapaligiran,” said Ruanto. “Sa murang edad pa lamang ay matututo na silang maging responsable sa kalikasan at maging bahagi ng pagbuo ng mas malinis na komunidad.”
The initiative is initially being implemented in selected public schools including Infanta Central School, PICAB Elementary School, and Tongohin Elementary School, allowing the municipality to begin the program with participating students from different communities. Municipal officials said the program may expand to additional schools as participation grows and more students take part in recycling activities.
Recyclable materials collected through the program will be sent to a partner recycling facility to ensure proper processing and reuse, helping reduce the amount of waste that ends up in disposal areas. This partnership strengthens cooperation between schools, the local government, and recycling partners in supporting community waste management efforts.
The agreement was also signed by Public Schools District Supervisor Luzviminda T. Buerano and Jenra Junkshop, represented by Randy M. Asis, reflecting cooperation between the local government, the education sector, and private recycling partners. Witnessing the signing were Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Officer Maris D. De Lara, members of the Sangguniang Bayan, and school heads from participating schools.
