Ismael ‘Mike’ D. Sueno got a special gift on the 26th anniversary of the DILG which falls on this day:his confirmation by the Commission on Appointments as the 16th DILG Secretary.
Sueno thanked the members of the powerful bicameral body for acknowledging his efforts in leading the DILG’s anti-drugs and criminality drive and for giving him the opportunity to continue serving the people.
“I am humbled by the CA’s confirmation of my appointment, and I assure them, the President and the public that I will not fail them,” he said.
Top officials of the DILG, who were all present during the CA hearing, welcomed Sueno’s confirmation.
“We knew that his confirmation would be a breeze because his passion for public service is contagious. We are 100 percent behind him in all his plans and programs to continuously empower our local governments and ensure the peace and safety of our communities,”said DILG Undersecretary Austere Panadero.
Senator Juan Edgardo ‘Sonny’ M. Angara,Senate Committee Chair on Local Government, and Rep. Josephine Ramirez-Sato endorsed Sueno’s appointment.
Awed by the early achievements of the Secretary especially in his first 100 days in office, Angara said Sueno has ably led the DILG’s drive against drugs, corruption, and criminality down to the barangay level, prioritizing the development of the barangay as the primary catalyst for positive change.
“Secretary Sueno is an ideal fit in the Cabinet, and I believe that he will throw his full talents and support behind the President and our colleagues in government for the good of the Filipino people,” Angara said.
Senator Gringo Honasan also said that since Sueno is a former seminarian, the“DILG is in good hands”.
A returnee to public service, Sueno earnestly works alongside President Duterte in the campaigns against illegal drugs, criminality and corruption issues which has already achieved much in his first six months at the Department
He has upheld transparency and the rule of law in the DILG’s investigations on “narco-execs” and“narco-generals,”cracking down on the narco-politics that has dragged down the country.
In pursuing the national government’s anti-illegal drugs campaign,Sueno has also enjoined local government units (LGUs) to deal compassionately with surrenderers to the PNP’s Oplan Tokhang.
He also spearheaded the MASA-MASID(People’s Watch)program, which aims to counter the drug problem with volunteerism and community-based rehabilitation, and the building of rehab centers with esteemed private partners.
The DILG likewise strengthened its programs on public safety, local economic development, business-friendliness and competitiveness, and poverty reduction;introduction of Davao’s 911 Emergency Hotline as the new nationwide crisis number;the Public-Private Partnership for the People Initiative for Local Governments (LGU-P4);the new streamlined Business Permits and Licensing System(BPLS);speedy rehabilitation and recovery of LGUs from disasters, such as during the recent consecutive Typhoons Karen and Lawin;and budget reforms for the poorest LGUs.
Sueno also jumpstarted the information and education drive on federalism. (DILG)
