Straight Talk

Two moderate earthquakes shook Batangas, the first earthquake hit the local Batangas fault near the Mabini and Tingloy areas last April 4 that caused residents to leave their property behind, the second earthquake, seismologists have noticed an increase in magnitude registering at 6.0, it is spotted in a deeper location along with the third one.

And this caused nationwide panic among the Netizens of the Philippines. OFWs also took social media after earthquake in the Philippines has gone viral to express concerns about their families and kababayan. At the same time, most Filipinos worried why are we having so many earthquakes? Will the Batangas earthquakes trigger the so-called “Big One,” as it lies in the West Valley Fault? Can “MegaQuakes” really happen like a magnitude 8 or higher?

While some people took a picture of it and posted it for all to see some Netizen posted “Pray for the people of the Philippines and pray for our nation as this is a matter of life and death. Others also posted that we need to pray “big prayers”, that this big one or the great Manila earthquake will not happen in our country. I actually find the habit of saying “sending prayers” fascinating. Some also say read the bible because the end is near, jesus is coming back and god’s judgement is sure. Are you ready?

According to one of the article of Getrealphilippines, the great Manila earthquake is coming, and prayer won’t stop it and no amount of “hashtag pray for the Philippines” would stop billions of years of geologic activity. If the earthquake does come for Manila, buildings will fall and many people will die.

However. Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum Jr. in an interview further explained that the recent Batangas earthquakes will not trigger the so-called “Big One,” as it lies in the West Valley Fault. He also said the origin of the first quake is the local Batangas fault near the Mabini and Tingloy areas. Solidum clarified that the two consequent tremors originated at the Manila Trench, meaning they are not related to the first one.

Can anyone predict earthquakes?

No. Neither the USGS, PhilVocs nor any other scientists have ever predicted a major earthquake. We do not know how, and we do not expect to know how any time in the foreseeable future.

PhilVocs said in a statement, it is currently impossible to predict the specific time, place, and strength of an impending quake and that any person who gives false or misleading data or information” concerning emergencies metes a penalty of up to six months in prison and a maximum fine of P10,000 under Republic Act No. 10639.

Yes, we cannot predict earthquakes and we cannot prevent earthquakes from happening or stop them once they’ve started either. We cannot say when the next major one will occur. But it would be better to predict exactly when earthquakes will occur like the typhoons that are relatively easy to track, right? We should always remember life is not sugar coated so is science. Unlike storms and typhoons, earthquakes cannot be “forecasted” and can only be predicted by looking at how often it happens in history.

All we can do is pray, stay calm but remain vigilant and alert. We also need to get prepared for an earthquake and know what we should do in the event of a quake. It’s better to be safe than sorry. We should also be praying through disasters and worldwide crises for it not to happen or to not cause major disasters and avert as much damage as possible.

Yes no amount of “hashtag pray for the Philippines” would stop an earthquake but without God and not praying to Him, we can really do nothing at all.

Yes a lot of Filipino internet users would rather turn their backs on the scientific reality of things and resort to faith. Why? Filipinos are indeed known worldwide as peoples of deep and great faith.

Yes doubting the power of prayer doesn’t make anyone an atheist, but will make you all lost your faith in God and to lose hope in difficult times.

Losing faith is giving up. I’m not saying it’s ‘bad’ for someone to feel that way; it is just sad when someone feels that way, but it is normal.

I have reached desperate moments in my life but in all my experience, I have never been in any accident... or any sort worth speaking about. There have been adversities, struggles, and despair and the like but still God always send me all the strength I need and there is always a message of hope for me.

Doubt isn’t a new problem for people. Some of Jesus’ friends doubted him, the most famous of whom example is Thomas. Thomas needed proof that Jesus had risen from the dead before he could believe it. Thomas had much in common with contemporary skeptics. He wanted proof and so do we. About a week later, Jesus showed up again and offered Thomas proof. Jesus invited Thomas to touch his wounds.

Take responsibility to seek out the answers to your questions. Don’t just ask them without looking for the answers. If you seek out the answers to life’s most important questions, you will be rewarded, just like Thomas was.

Happy Easter everyone!
