LUCENA CITY, Quezon - The provincial government of Quezon through the office of the provincial agriculturist (OPA) will be awarding outstanding farmers and fisherfolks via Gawad Saka 2018 on August 14, 2018.

The awarding is part of the weeklong celebration of the Niyogyugan festival and in line with August 19 Quezon Day celebration. The event also coincides with the celebration of “Araw ng Pamilyang Magsasaka” on August 14 which will be held in this city.

The awardees for Gawad-Saka 2018 in the province of Quezon are as follows: Infanta, Quezon- Oustanding municipal fisheries and aquatic resources and management council; Atimonan MAFC- Outstanding municipal agriculture and fishery council; Pinagdanlayan Rural Improvement Club in Dolores, Quezon- Outstanding rural improvement club; Francisco Hugo- Outstanding high value commercial crops farmer; Alarin Paolo P. Yanoria of Tayabas City- Outstanding young farmer/ fisherfolk; Adelino D. Ojos of Tiaong, Quezon- Outstanding corn farmer; Ayrin Llorin of Pagbilao, Quezon- Outstanding organic farmer and Alejandro C. Sulabo of Tayabas City- Outstanding rice farmer adopting integrated rice based system.

Provincial agriculturist Roberto Gajo said Gawad-Saka is a yearly undertaking of the Department of Agriculture which aims to recognize the exemplary performance of farmer/fisherfolk families engaged in agricultural, fishery, rural and social development undertaking.

Gawad-Saka aims to contribute to agriculture and fishery development by strengthening the farmer/ fisherfolk family approach and to project farming/ fishing as a productive and profitable enterprise for the Filipino family.

“The program also aimed to pay tribute to farmer/ fisherfolk entrepreneur as role model to the rest of the farmer/ fisherfolk families for countryside development,” Gajo added. (Ruel Orinday, PIA Quezon)
