CANDELARIA, Quezon - Candelaria Elementary School (CES) Main Youth for Environment in Schools Organization or YES-O, in collaboration with General Parents – Teachers Association (GPTA), conducted the first Rummage Sale and Exhibit of Recycled Projects for 2019 ECO – Friendly Activities to advocate two of the 5R’s – Recycling and Reusing of materials, to lessen wastes, to promote entrepreneurship among pupils, and to raise funds for YES-O Projects, March 11 to 15.

Teachers, pupils, and parents from Kindergarten to grade six and LSEN donated their pre-loved items such as clothes, bags, shoes and toys for the Rummage Sale. These were then tagged with affordable prices and were displayed in CES Main Function Area for everyone to visit and buy their chosen items.

Alongside with the said Rummage Sale was the exhibit of recycled projects. Pupils were given schedules to visit the exhibit and were asked to write or say their reflections about what they have witnessed.

“The Rummage Sale promotes Reuse of materials instead of throwing them or left unused in the garage. On the other hand, pupils learned to make something creative and useful out of wastes from their Recycled Projects,” Ruby Anna M. Rosalda said during her orientation on the first day of the activity. “We are hopeful that pupils will learn the importance of proper waste management through this activity, and procure the proposed YES O projects,” she added.

Some of the proposed projects were portable Solar Panels, additional glass-covered Transparency Board along the school covered walk, repainting and repairing of school ECO-gardens, maintenance of the School Gulayan, installation of Rainwater Catcher, and printing and installation of tarpaulin/ posters of disaster, health, environment-related information.

Part of the activity was also teaching pupils entrepreneurship, since intermediate graders watched over their stalls to sell their items and deal with customers.

Different school committees also agreed with the plan of sending the unsold Rummage Sale items to less fortunate individuals by collaborating with the Barangay LGUs. This will become their collaborative project, promoting the school’s advocacy of extending help to all individuals.
