BATANGAS CITY - Recognizing its potential to be an international transshipment hub, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Region 4-A is pushing for the improvement and full operationalization of the Batangas International Port.
In a stakeholders' forum held here on August 15, DTI IV-A Regional Director Marilou Q. Toledo bared the plans and competitive advantages of using the Batangas International Port as a 'smart trade solution for Southern Luzon.'
“We, in the DTI, would like our manufacturers and exporters here in CALABARZON to further grow and develop by being efficient and cost effective in their logistics and transportation cost in bringing their goods to their intended market," Toledo said.
"Likewise, we would like Batangas Port to be fully utilized and efficient, not just as a transshipment hub but also as a port that can directly ship cargoes to international destinations at the least possible time,” the Regional Director added.
Toledo added that once the port uses its full potential, it would be possible to have a direct shipment from the Batangas International Port to Japan, shortening the transit time of goods exported by local manufacturers.
Emphasizing recent developments of the port, the Asian Terminals Inc. (ATI) backed DTI Region IV-A and enumerated competitive advantages of the port to exporters and manufacturers.
According to Jel M. Yulo, ATI marketing manager, the Batangas International Port has improved its cash flow and maximized free time of shipping lines. Yulo added that the port now offers lesser storage cost and trucking cost and has also shortened its delivery call-in lead time.
Yulo also noted some recent developments in the port such as the ongoing civil works on crane rails, berth connectivity, yard rehabilitation, and the expansion of container yard.
Meanwhile, the Philippine Ports Authority vowed to continuously improve and provide port facilities and services that is of global standard.
In a statement, PPA Batangas Acting Manager Ambrocio O. Ilao said "the presence of everyone in the government and private sector is a clear manifestation of their great commitment towards the economic prosperity of our country, particularly in response to the increasing business opportunity in the CALABARZON region."
