MAUBAN, Quezon - Combined personnel of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Maritime police, and Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) intercepted almost half-million pesos worth of transhipped premium species of flitches at Sitio Quezon, Brgy. Sadsaran in this coastal town.

Forester Ramil Limpiada who heads the DENR- Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO)- Tayabas said the 48 flitches of Narra and kamagong have a total volume of 1,995.42 board feet worth around P500,000.

Limpiada said the illegal forest products were sourced from Cagayan and Isabela provinces and were transhipped to this coastal town via motorboats by lumber traders.

Upon receiving information that a shipment of flitches will be arriving, Limpiada said his personnel immediately coordinated with 403rd PNP Maritime Station under Major Manuel Magat and Phil. Coast Guard and they formed a joint team to have the contraband intercepted.

At around 10:00 p.m., the flitches were found abandoned by their shippers along the shore of said village.

"They (shippers) were forced to escape for fear of being arrested by the pursuing authorities, leaving the contraband", said Magat.

The fitches were hauled and deposited at the Interwood compound in Brgy. Cagsiay 2 for safekeeping.

For several decades, this coastal town has been used as a transshipment point of 'hot' logs and flitches coming from Region 1, by illegal lumber traders.
