USAID, through its TB Platforms Project joins PIA-4A radio program

CALAMBA CITY, Laguna - The United States Agency International Development (USAID) joined the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) CALABARZON radio program 'PIA Ngayon' on its June 3 episode to discuss the USAID's TB Platforms Project in the Philippines.

During the episode, Dr. Karen Dalawangbayan, USAID’s TB Platforms Field Operations Area Manager for Region 4-A, shared how the project supports DOH National Tuberculosis Program thru DOH Region IV-A, LGUs and health facilities in the Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon) region. She explained the various technical assistance of USAID to health offices and barangays especially in strengthening TB response amid COVID-19.



Ms. Lilian de Leon, Health Governance Specialist of the project, on the other hand, detailed the need for LGU champions in responding to the call for continuous TB programs and budget allocation for TB medicines, support for frontliners such as healthcare workers serving both TB and COVID-19, and even to LGU staff who are working on the implementation of TB treatment especially in Region IV-A, one of the regions with high burden of TB cases.

PIA Ngayon is a radio program aired via J101.5FM and produced by PIA Region 4A. USAID’s TB Platforms partnered with the Philippine Information Agency to promote public awareness on USAID’s support to the TB reaponse amid COVID-19. USAID’s TB Platforms is using multimedia platforms in its information dissemination campaign including local radio programs, TV news and features, Facebook live streaming, online webinars, and technical remote mentoring and monitoring.

One of its recent activities include the promotion of infecton prevention and control for both TB and COVID-19 and the online forum on the continuous provision of TB treatment amid COVID-19 highlighting the support to frontliners distributing TB medicines during community quarantine and TB nurse coordinators monitoring their TB patients using a mobile application dubbed as ConnecTB.

USAID’s TB Platforms Chief of Party, Dr. Marianne Calnan expressed her gratitude to this ongoing partnership which certainly will help the project share its public-private engagements as the project continue to provide technical assistance to DOH National Tuberculosis Program. USAID’s TB Platforms is implemented by University Research Co., (URC) LLC. and collaborates with DOH Regional Offices in Region 3 and 4-A, NCR and Marawi City.

During the COVID-19 community quarantine, USAID’s SBCC Specialist Diwata de Castro-Paredes reached out to PIA for localized media support to be able to share milestones and challenges related to the project’s support to the government’s TB response amid COVID-19. They also rolled out partnerships with youth-led organizations like the National Youth Commission, Yes Pinoy Foundation, 2030 Youthforce in the Philippines and Living Laudato Si.

These organizations committed to engage their members in promoting infection prevention and control for both TB and COVID-19. Even the media organizations like the Photojournalists’ Center of the Philippines pledged their full support to the project’s call for local champions who will practice infection prevention and control measures while at work as well as help USAID’s TB Platforms in the information, education and communication campaign on the need to stay safe from TB and COVID-19.
