LUCBAN, Quezon - The world seemed to stop during the rampage of the global coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic. But it hasn’t been able to stop the flow of creativity of three gentlemen in the fields of visual arts, here in the Philippines—Noel Bueza, Brando Limon Bati, and Adler Llagas.

However, the National Arts Month kicked off recently with a glimpse of the glittering lobby of the Metropolitan Theater, newly restored and awaiting its reopening in April.

Over the years, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), as well as other government agencies and private organizations, has been organizing events and activities to highlight the artistic brilliance of the Filipinos.

In line with the celebration of National Arts Month and National Heritage Month—Bueza, Bati, and Llagas have launched their month-long exhibit aptly titled Pagdaloy, as it is the testament of their commitment to their craft as visual artists.

"Ang tinataguyod natin dito ay turismo at kultura natin. Inaasam ko na maging national ang kalidad ng lokal artist. Kaya sinikap ko ang magkaroon ng ganitong maging instrumento maging daluyan ng sining. Dito din pinapangarap ang 7 form of arts (painting, architecture, sculpture, literature, music, performing and cinema.)" Bueza said.

Councilor Marife Veluz Hari, Chairman of Tourism Council also joined the art exhibition dubbed as Pagdaloy said, "Asahan niyo po ninyo ang pagsuporta ng Sangguniang Bayan kasama na rin ang punong bayan Mayor Celso Dator, pasimula ito pero may magandang hinaharap sa mga susunod na panahon"

Even during the lockdown and economic slowdown brought by Covid-19, their creativity continuously flowed, and the result—several pieces of beautiful works, which are truly world-class.

"Sa kultura ng mga kabataan ay niyayakap nila pero ang importance ng Art hindi naiimbive dapat iredirect, na ang sining ay isang instrumento sa pagbabago ng maayos ng society." according to Linang Creative Director, Engr. Edsel P. Paraon.

The three have never had that academic training when it comes to creating art. But despite this, they are able to successfully penetrate the art scene and are now considered as three of the most important artists in the Philippines. With their body of works, they are also included in the roster of artists that can be considered as “masters.”

Bueza has been known for his stainless steel sculptures under his “Karitan/Lambanog” series, as well as with his pen-and-ink drawings of the most important Catholic churches, here in the Philippines.

Moreover, he has been able to produce works using different mediums, with different subjects—koi, landscapes, seascapes, cityscapes, still life, among others. Because of this, the name “Noel P. Bueza” has become a household name when it comes to art. His works have become one of the sought-after pieces amongst art patrons and enthusiasts, local and overseas.

Bati, meanwhile, was discovered by the late author and art mentor, Emmanuel Duldulao, and has been known for his Bamboo and Mother and Child series.

Acclimated to the palette knife technique, using oil and acrylic, Bati is able to create various important pieces which found their way to art books, gallery walls, and the homes and offices of his clients, here and abroad.

Moreover, Llagas is also a self-taught artist and very prolific in painting scenes in the countryside. The idyllic life of the rural folks and the beauty of the surroundings are staples in his works.

Also, an artist discovered by Duldulao, he is now one of the most sought-after rural scape artists here in the country, and his works also found their way to the houses, galleries, and offices of his patrons.

Pagdaloy is akin to a river that waters the fields and meadows, keeping them fertile and alive; and you are welcome to witness the flourishing of beauty in this three-man show, which will run until March 20, 2021.

The annual celebration of National Arts Month started with the signing of Presidential Proclamation 683, in 1991, declaring February as National Arts Month.

The NCCA announced the programs lined up for National Arts Month on Facebook Live, kicking things off with a Demsu, a T’boli ritual for protection and guidance for special occasions and ceremonies.

This was followed by a number of performances, including a preview of the regional dance contest “Sayaw Pinoy,” featuring local dance troupes in various settings such as a fishing village breakwater, a port, and a mountain highway. Singers Sarah Geronimo, Denise Barbacena, and Gloc 9 also premiered a music video for a theme song celebrating Filipino art.

The celebration of Arts Month is mainly composed of the flagship projects of the NCCA’s seven national committees — Architecture and Allied Arts (headed by architect Zenaida Galingan), Cinema (Rolando Tolentino), Dance (Shirley Halili-Cruz), Literary Arts (Julieta Mallari), Music (Felipe de Leon Jr.), Dramatic Arts (Felimon Blanco), and Visual Arts (Geraldine Araneta) which this year, with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, will mostly be held online.

Architecture and Allied Arts

In celebration of the National Arts Month, the National Committee on Architecture and the Allied Arts — in cooperation with CulturAid Inc. and the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP), Philippine Institute of Interior Design (PIID), Philippine Association of Landscape Architects, and Philippine Institute of Environmental Planners — is inviting planning and design professionals, academicians, students, and the general public, both local and international, to engage in a conversation that will highlight how we have managed and reshaped our spaces, both interior and exterior, public and private, to adapt to life in quarantine.
