CALAMBA CITY, Laguna  — The Department of Health (DOH) – CALABARZON is working to improve Covid-19 vaccine acceptance among the parents of children aged 5 to 11 years, as more schools in the region are reopening for the conduct of face-to-face classes.

Last June 9, DOH CALABARZON convened other government agencies and civil societies for the Coordination Meeting and Workshop on School-based Covid-19 Vaccination, in a bid to create strategies to attain the 57 percent target of the unvaccinated children aged five to 11 years by the end of June.

Dr. Restituta G. Magpantay, head of DOH CALABARZON Family Health Unit (FMU) and Regional Vaccine Operation Center (RVOC) presented the vaccination status and the targets for the school-based vaccination.

Meanwhile, representatives from the Department of Education (DepEd), Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), Office of the Civil Defense (OCD), and Philippine Pediatric Society- Southern Tagalog Chapter (PPS-STC) have identified coordinated actions to achieve a common goal of scaling up vaccination coverage.

DOH CALABARZON Assistant Regional Director Leda M. Hernandez said the health department wanted to strengthen its partnership with other agencies to improve vaccination acceptance among parents and guardians, especially as more schools in the region are reopening for face-to-face classes.

In a press release, Hernandez said school aged children are at a higher risk of getting infected with Covid-19, along with senior citizens and persons with comorbidities.

“This has been our plan, to convene all our partner agencies to strengthen our collaborative efforts in improving vaccination acceptance among parents and guardians of 5-11-year-old children, now that many of them have started the face-to-face classes,” Hernandez said.

As of June 8, 2022, the Regional Vaccination Operations Center (RVOC) reported a total of 1, 498, 295 children aged 5-11 years in Calabarzon remain unvaccinated against Covid-19.

Quezon province continues to report the lowest vaccination rate among children aged 5-11 among the five provinces in the region. It remains at Alert Level 2, except for the Municipalities of Candelaria, San Antonio, and Dolores, along with the City of Lucena. — PB, PIA4A
