CITY OF MANILA (PIA)— The National Nutrition Council (NNC) on Monday recognized exemplary local government units and nutrition stakeholders across the country for implementing effective nutrition programs, with Biñan City receiving the prestigious Nutrition Honor Award.

The Nutrition Honor Award is the highest distinction given by NNC to an LGU in recognition of its outstanding planning, management, and implementation of local nutrition programs.

In his acceptance speech, Mayor Arman Dimaguila said the city government does not solely focus on dole-outs in its nutrition programs but also on livelihood programs while simultaneously educating its citizens on nutrition.

“Ang parangal na ito ay nakamit dahil sa pagpupursigi ng City Government of Biñan sa pagsusulong ng mga programang pang nutrisyon sa Biñan,” Dimaguila said.

The City Mayor cited several best practices despite the pandemic such as the locally-run Biñan Bakery with its pandesal and soya milk, its local rabbitry industry program, and organic farming focused on hydroponics.

Biñan City Mayor Atty. Walfredo “Arman” Dimaguila and Biñan City Representative Marlyn “Len” Alonte received the award alongside Department of Health Region 4-A Regional Director Ariel Valencia and NNC 4-A Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Carina Santiago in an awarding ceremony held at the Manila Hotel in Pasay City.

The Biñan City Government also received a P1 million prize from the NNC.

NNC’s active role in ending malnutrition
Department of Health (DOH) Assistant Secretary and NNC Executive Director Azucena Dayanghirang adds that the NHA is one of the longest-running awards given by the agency.

In her message, Dayanghirang said the highly coveted award started in the 1970s before being halted during the EDSA revolution and resumed in 1994.

DOH Officer-in-Charge Dr. Maria Rosario Vergeire lauded NNC, headed by Dayanghirang for its active role as the country’s top governing body promoting nutrition.

“Dahil po sa kanilang (NNC) mga efforts marami na pong na-achieve ang NNC in terms of nutrition surveillance, nutrition promotion, and other programs,” Vergeire said.

Vergeire emphasized the need to include social determinants, which must be addressed to achieve the country’s nutrition goals.

Meanwhile, Civil Service Commission Chairperson Karlo Alexei Nograles recognized awardees and stakeholders in his keynote speech for the 2022 National Nutrition Awarding Ceremony.

“To all of the awardees, balita ko ito po ang pinakamalaking batch ng NHA awardees. Congratulations po,” Nograles said.

In CALABARZON, Marietta Dogelio of Tagaytay City was also recognized as one of the finalists for the 2022 Outstanding City Nutrition Program Coordinator award. Tagaytay City Nutrition Action Officer Engr. Emilma U. Pello was also a contender for National Outstanding Municipal Action Officer while Quezon Provincial Nutrition Action Officer Joan Maricel Z. Decena was also a finalist for National Outstanding District Nutrition Program Coordinator. (GG/PIA-Rizal)
