Liwanag revises code for stronger women's protection and empowerment

LUCENA CITY, Quezon - Quezon Province took a significant step forward in promoting women's empowerment and gender equality with the passage of the Revised Gender and Development (GAD) Code 2024. This updated code outlines comprehensive policies that aim to recognize and enhance the role of women in all aspects of development.

Board Member Yna Liwanag Asistio, sponsor of the revised code and chairperson of the Gender and Development Committee, expressed gratitude to stakeholders during the 89th General Meeting of the Provincial Council on March 25, 2024. "This revision is a declaration that Quezon Province values the equal contributions of women and men," Liwanag emphasized.



"The ladder is an equally crucial road in nation-building; as such, the rise of women shall be respected, promoted, and welfare promoted. Towards this end, the provincial government of Quezon should actively contribute to the status of gender responsibility development, policies, empowerment of women, elimination of gender based discrimination, and promotion of human dignity, and that opportunity should be provided to ensure everyone's participation in the development of the province," Liwanag said during the presentation at the Gender and Development forum.

"Our objectives of revising the GAD code are that the province keyjoins shall recognize women and men as equal partners in development and community building by ensuring that they equally share all the productive domestic, community, and decision making work. The province shall also strive to uplift the conditions of women and enhance their full potential as members of the community by making all its policies, programs, services, work systems, and other developmental mechanisms in the entire province gender responsive." she added.

The code is firmly rooted in national and international laws promoting gender equality. This revision ensures the 2018 GAD Code reflects the most current gender equality standards and practices, guaranteeing women in the province have equal opportunities for growth and development.

The Quezon Province provincial government remains unwavering in its commitment to gender equality and women's empowerment. Prioritizing initiatives outlined in the revised GAD Code, the government will work collaboratively with stakeholders to build a more inclusive and equitable society for all its residents.

"The Revised GAD Code directly benefits the women of Quezon Province," states Board Member Liwanag. "It includes provisions for their protection and advancement, demonstrating the local government's dedication to addressing women's needs and upholding their rights within the province."
