LUCENA CITY, Quezon – Years of dedicated effort in promoting public well-being culminated on July 21 as Lucena City was officially honored as the "Kampeon ng Kalusugan sa mga Komunidad" (Champion of Community Health). Mayor Mark Don Victor Alcala accepted this prestigious award from the Department of Health (DOH) and the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), a clear nod to the city's robust health programs.
The award was presented during the city government's regular flag-raising ceremony, held at the Lucena Convention Center. Mayor Alcala was joined by Vice Mayor Roderick “Dondon” Alcala, City Health Office Head Dr. Jocelyn Chua, and City Councilors Patrick Nadera, Baste Brizuela, and Atty. Sunshine Abcede-Llaga in receiving the commendation.
This recognition stands as a powerful testament to Lucena City's successful implementation of significant health programs and initiatives, all geared towards fostering a safe, well-organized, and healthy community for its residents. The "Kampeon ng Kalusugan sa mga Komunidad" award is a highly regarded recognition bestowed by the DOH in partnership with the DILG to local government units (LGUs) across the Philippines.
It signifies exceptional performance and unwavering commitment in implementing community-driven health programs. This prestigious accolade serves as a national endorsement of an LGU's dedication to public health, acknowledging their efforts to establish healthier, safer, and more well-organized communities. The primary objective is to recognize and incentivize LGUs for their proactive steps in maintaining and promoting excellent community health.
While specific criteria are comprehensive, the award typically assesses an LGU's success in ensuring accessibility and visibility of health programs, making health services and vital information easily reachable and well-known within the community. It also considers effective health promotion, which means implementing impactful strategies and campaigns to encourage healthy behaviors and disease prevention in Lucena City.
The ability to develop sustainable action plans, creating and executing long-term strategies for continuous health improvement, is also crucial. The award recognizes LGUs that are fostering innovation in health programs, introducing new and effective approaches to address evolving health challenges in their communities, including those within Lucena City.
This includes addressing specific health concerns, with focused initiatives on areas like maternal and child health, non-communicable diseases, mental health, and environmental health, among others. Finally, demonstrating strong leadership and governance, showcasing a clear commitment from local officials to prioritize health within their administrative agenda, is a key component for cities like Lucena.
Winning this award is a major achievement for Lucena City as it celebrates the tireless work of the city government, its health office, and residents, while also inspiring ongoing commitment to public well-being. This accolade solidifies Lucena City's status as a benchmark for other LGUs, boosting its reputation as a forward-thinking and health-focused community.
