LUCENA CITY, Quezon - After testing traffic changes under a three-month experimental scheme earlier this year, Lucena City recently has approved a longer five-month one-way traffic and parking program on selected streets. The City Council unanimously passed Ordinance No. 2930 on third and final reading, extending the period for evaluating measures aimed at improving traffic flow and road safety.
The ordinance moved through its final legislative stage after council members voted unanimously to adopt the measure. The approval authorized city authorities to begin enforcing the experimental traffic and parking scheme on designated streets during the five-month trial period.
The longer testing period will affect motorists, commuters, businesses and residents who rely on the city's road network each day. City officials expect the additional months to provide more data on traffic conditions and help determine whether the changes should become permanent.
The new measure follows Ordinance No. 2915, which introduced a three-month experimental one-way traffic and parking scheme earlier this year as part of the city's efforts to address congestion in busy areas. The latest ordinance extends the testing period, giving authorities more time to monitor traffic conditions and evaluate the effectiveness of the regulations.
With the ordinance now approved, city offices are set to prepare for its implementation on affected roads. The city government is expected to install traffic signs and conduct information activities before enforcement begins.
Under the ordinance, the city will implement one-way traffic and parking regulations on selected streets while monitoring their impact on mobility and public safety. The measure also provides for enforcement procedures and penalties for violations during the trial period.
At the same time, authorities will document traffic conditions throughout the five-month trial period. Findings gathered during the experiment will form part of the city's assessment of the scheme and any future traffic policies.
Councilor Americo Q. Lacerna moved for the ordinance's approval during the council's 45th regular session presided over by Vice Mayor Roderick Alcala. The measure secured unanimous support from council members present during the session.
Following the council's action, authorities are expected to evaluate the results of the experimental scheme after the trial period concludes. The assessment will cover traffic flow, parking conditions and other factors identified under the ordinance.
The ordinance forms part of Lucena City's continuing efforts to address congestion as commercial activity and vehicle use increase across the city. Ordinance No. 2930 takes effect in accordance with existing legal requirements and will remain under review throughout the experimental period.
