CANDELARIA, Quezon - A rescued Aspin resting beneath a makeshift roof has no way of knowing who paid for its next meal or the medicine that helped it recover from neglect. What separates that dog from life on the streets is the quiet generosity of strangers who may never see the animal they helped save.
That generosity is once again being called upon as Aspin Academy works to transform a newly secured property into a temporary home for its rescued animals. The volunteer-run rescue group recently launched its Fence and Kubo Fund Drive, seeking ₱200,000 to build a perimeter fence and a kubo after relocating to a site that still lacks the basic structures needed to operate safely.
Securing a new property solved one of the organization’s biggest challenges, but it also exposed how much work remained before the shelter could fully protect the animals already living there. Volunteers must first complete the fence and kubo before the site can function as the secure refuge they envisioned.
According to Aspin Academy, the fence will prevent rescued animals from wandering beyond the property while reducing the risks posed by traffic and other outside hazards. The kubo will provide volunteers with a place to prepare food, store supplies and carry out the daily work of caring for rescued animals waiting for adoption.
The latest appeal follows an earlier fundraising effort for shelter improvements and a cattery that collected more than ₱108,000, although it did not reach its original ₱350,000 goal. Rather than abandon the project, the organization lowered its immediate target and said about ₱140,000 is still needed to complete the fence and kubo at the new location.
Aspin Academy currently cares for 35 rescued dogs while continuing to feed stray animals that wander to the shelter, adding to the daily cost of food, medicine and veterinary treatment. Like many volunteer-run rescue organizations, it depends largely on donations from the public rather than institutional funding to sustain those efforts.
The rescue group acknowledged that returning to supporters for help is never an easy decision because every animal it saves also brings years of responsibility for daily care and medical needs. Even so, it said protecting the rescues already under its care remains more important than the discomfort of asking for assistance again.
“We know this is another big goal, and we have asked for help many times before because every rescue brings another responsibility that cannot be ignored. Today we are once again choosing hope because our rescues deserve a safe place to call home where they can finally live without fear.”
The organization said small donations become meaningful when combined with hundreds of others from people who share the same goal of giving rescued animals a secure place to recover. It urged supporters to see every contribution as another step toward completing the shelter instead of measuring its value by the amount alone.
“Even one peso you share can absolutely help us reach our target amount because every contribution becomes part of something much larger than a single donation. Together, we can build a safe home where our rescues can finally live without fear while giving them the care and protection they deserve.”
Supporters have continued sharing the appeal across social media while encouraging friends and relatives to join the fundraising drive. Each contribution brings construction closer to completion and allows volunteers to devote more time to rescuing, rehabilitating and preparing neglected animals for permanent homes.
