According to Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella deathpenalty is a “vital tool” in administration’s war on drugs and crime.

54 representatives in the congress voted against death penalty although it is against the speaker. Former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and Batangas Rep. Vilma Santos-Recto are among 11 lawmakers who take the risks lose their positions in the House of Representatives for voting against the death penalty bill.

This topic has long been the subject of debate and has been long discussed in social media and universities. This isn’t a new subject but every day there are new insights to consider.

THE PHILIPPINES abolished capital punishment in June 2006 under Republic Act No. 9346, also known as An Act Prohibiting the Imposition of the Death Penalty in the Philippines.

Now it’s 2017 President Rodrigo Duterte wants to bring it back stating reintroducing the capital punishment will double their efforts to battle crime as the war on drugs continue.

News report said on Tuesday that the lower house voted to approve the bill — in its third and final reading — with 217 voting yes and 54 no. In any case, the bill still requires senatorial endorsement before the President can sign it into law.

“Not only is capital punishment an inherently cruel punishment that is invariably imposed unfairly, but — contrary to what Duterte and others claim — it has not been shown to deter crime,” Carlos Conde, the Philippines researcher for Human Rights Watch in Asia, said in a statement.

“Adding a veneer of legality to the bloodbath in the Philippines will make stopping it even harder,” he added.

When Duterte launched his “war on drugs,” to Oct. 12, more than 8,000 people has ben killed according to local media. The United States and human rights groups in the Philippines has expressed concern over the spate of alleged extrajudicial killings since the time it come about. The President said once the death penalty restore they will only execute “five or six” criminals daily.

Crimes punishable by death — to be carried out by hanging, firing squad or lethal injection — include the sale, trading, or transportation of drugs, and the maintenance of a drug den among others; drug possession is punishable by life imprisonment under the bill.

People believe that the death sentence is the solution to stop crime and uphold human rights. And lawless will fear death once they know how easy it is to take a life of one of their own maybe they’ll change.

While support for the death penalty for murder is still high in the Philippines many are also against the death penalty. Pope Francis calls Death Penalty inappropriate “no matter how serious the crime”. How can we tell if there will be a margin of error or not. Death penalty instill fear to people. But do criminals fear death? These criminal have killed people, raped children, committed acts of terrorism and other heinous crimes.

Having rectified the balance of my judgment I must admit I am neutral. It’s not just a question of whether you are for or against the death penalty. It’s a matter of life and death. I want justice for the victims and punishment to criminals who don’t even bother to give importance to the lives of others. But I also don’t want innocent people to be convicted of death penalty. It is not wrong to attempt to ensure the life of the people, but rather it isn’t all in all correct to protect the lives of those who have destroy others either.

In many prisons, crime continues inside the prison walls. However some criminals leave behind prison and become better people. What makes someone commit a ruthless crime is one thing some people cannot really understand.

Even the Bible has to say about capital punishment. Whoever sheds man’s blood, his blood will be shed by man, for God made man in His image. — Genesis 9:6 (HCSB) Even if we believe that the death penalty has biblical support, we must see that it is carried out for the purposes of justice, never revenge. Do not commit the crime for which you do not want to serve the sentence.
