As much as we Filipinos love man’s best friend, one thing is certain: dogs bite.

While the neighbor down the street may not think his dog could ever bite anyone at all, under any circumstances, you should know better. Many pros will tell you that people get bitten by dogs for various reasons. You might see a dog you don’t know, and note that it looks lost. It’s not acting in an aggressive manner, it’s just kind of walking around. You might go up to it with the best of intentions, and suddenly you are a dog bite victim.

I am going to my cousin’s house on my dad’s side one evening just four days ago, January 9, 2019, when a familiar sight of dog outside my cousin’s house, greeted me. Sadly; and unfortunately, all too tragically, bit me on my left upper leg, leaving a minor wound. I was shocked.

Think this couldn’t happen to you? Getting bit by a dog is traumatic, no matter how old you are.

My cousin told me to press on the wound gently to cause some bleeding to help flush out as much bacteria as possible and wash the wound with mild soap and water.

The following day me and my cousin went to Rabies Vaccination Clinics to get a treatments for me. The treatment includes getting shots of rabies vaccine after being bitten or scratched by an infected animal. The shots will stop the infection from spreading. Post-exposure rabies vaccination shots are available in public and private Animal Bite Treatment Centers.

These days even a small injury can turn into a pile of medical bills that could have you on the ropes of life for many years to come. You need money from those responsible to cover these hefty medical expenses.

Thank God I got rabies treatment free of charge from the public health. Private hospitals cost approximately Php 11k-50k. I had my first vaccination last January 11, 2019. Still I have to complete the 4 vaccination ensure its efficacy.

All dogs, no matter what size or how cute can and will bite. Dog biting can be very dangerous, especially when that bite will come from some random dog out of the streets.

Always supervise children when they interact with them. They may misunderstand children because of their size, and their movements are similar to that of prey. Owners must also teach young children to respect dogs and their power. Children should be taught that pulling the dogs’ ears, tail, and snout may provoke them into biting. Training the dog through exposing it to different situations will socialize them thus reduces the chance for it to be provoked. Keep your pet healthy by giving it regular checkups to the vet and for anti rabies shots. Also, spend more time with them as dogs are social animals.

Other ways to stop a dog attack is not to run past them because they instinctively like to chase things, especially when they perceive you as prey. Another is to stay clear of a dog that has puppies, because female dogs are more aggressive when they have litter. If a dog approaches you, calm down and do not move because they are determining whether you are a threat or not.

If ever you get bitten, it is crucial that you seek medical attention. If the dog that bit you is a stray, it is probably that it has rabies. Despite all this, one must maintain calm and immediately go to specialists to receive advice and vaccine against rabies. .

If you or a loved one have been a dog bite victim. your average cost for treating the dog bite wounds can end up close to ₱15,000. The risk of the wound becoming infected is significant, and can be worse than the initial attack. It is imperative that you receive proper medical care for the dog attack injuries. Besides the initial emergency medical treatment, you may be facing ongoing professional care which may include plastic surgery. There may be difficult to repair damage and scarring, sometimes two or more surgeries are necessary. Oftentimes, as the dog attack was such a traumatic event, the dog bite victim might even need to receive professional counseling for the emotional issues involved.

If you or a family member have been bitten by dog and suffered injuries, immediately seek medical care. Even if you do not think the wounds are very serious, you still need to be cleared by a physician. Make sure that you know if the dog involved was up to date on their shots and immunizations. The next step is to seek legal counsel. You need a good dog bite attorney to guide you through the process.

Dog attacks can be horrible and traumatic. Learning how to avoid one can literally save a life.
