LUCENA CITY, Quezon - The provincial government of Quezon has reissued an order mandating the wearing of face masks in public areas. This decision comes as a proactive measure to curb the spread of COVID-19 and protect the health and safety of its residents. The reissuance of this order highlights the government's commitment to enforcing strict protocols and ensuring compliance among its constituents.

An order signed by Provincial Governor Angelina Tan on December 27 but made public on Friday, December 29, 2023, on the official Facebook page of the Quezon Provincial government stated that "face masks shall continue to be worn for indoor settings and in outdoor settings where physical distancing cannot be maintained." This proactive measure aims to minimize the risk of COVID-19 spreading and prioritize the well-being of the province's residents.

It also emphasized the importance of wearing face masks as a crucial tool in preventing the transmission of the virus, especially in crowded areas or situations where social distancing is challenging during holiday gatherings and events. The order also urged businesses and establishments to strictly enforce the face mask policy to ensure the safety of both their employees and customers.

Additionally, the Provincial Governor encouraged residents to practice good hygiene habits, such as regular handwashing and sanitizing, to further protect themselves from the virus. Isolating and testing should also be done for individuals who exhibit symptoms or have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for the virus. These measures are essential in controlling the spread of the virus and preventing further outbreaks within the community.

This month, according to the Department of Health (DOH), COVID-19 cases have significantly decreased in the province, indicating that these measures have been effective in curbing the spread of the virus. However, the country has seen a rise in cases in other regions, highlighting the importance of implementing these measures consistently nationwide.

From 1,821 cases monitored between December 5 and 11, to 2,725 cases recorded between December 12 and 18, the DOH reported a 50% increase in new COVID-19 cases in December. This increase in cases serves as a reminder that the fight against COVID-19 is far from over and that continued vigilance and adherence to safety protocols are crucial. It is imperative for authorities to closely monitor the situation and swiftly implement necessary measures to contain the spread of the virus in these regions.

The agency also documented 18 cases of COVID-19 Omicron subvariant JN.1, the most common cause of coronavirus infections in the United States. Although all of the patients have recovered, health officials have advised the susceptible people to continue wearing masks. The general public was also told to update their flu and pneumococcal vaccines.
