LUCENA CITY, Quezon – Commuters relying on the Philippine National Railways (PNR) for travel between Lucena and Calamba will need to find alternative arrangements, as the PNR announced today, June 17, the temporary suspension of services on the Lucena-Calamba-Lucena route. The suspension is for major repairs and maintenance work crucial for improving railway safety and efficiency.

The extensive work will focus on critical infrastructure, including the repair of rails, embankments, and bridges along the route. These efforts are a continuation of maintenance operations that first began in April, aiming to ensure the long-term reliability of the railway system.

According to the public announcement, this is a "major repair" aimed at ensuring the good condition of the trains operating on the said route, including the engine and other components. PNR officials anticipate the repair work to last approximately three to four weeks, based on the agency's initial assessment.

Barring any unforeseen delays, train operations on the Lucena-Calamba-Lucena line are targeted to resume by the first or second week of July. The PNR also stated that this undertaking is a response to the President's directive to ensure safe and orderly travel for commuters using the PNR.

This commitment highlights the government's focus on enhancing public transportation infrastructure and prioritizing the safety of its citizens. The comprehensive repair work is not merely a stop-gap measure but a strategic investment in the long-term viability of the PNR's services in the region.

"This necessary maintenance is part of our broader preparations," a PNR spokesperson stated, "to facilitate the transfer of trainsets currently operating in Manila to Quezon and Bicol provinces. Our goal is to provide safer and more affordable public transportation options for more Filipinos."

This strategic redeployment of resources underscores PNR's efforts to expand its reach and improve connectivity across different regions, ultimately aiming to alleviate traffic congestion and provide a more sustainable mode of transport. The current suspension, while an inconvenience, is a critical step towards realizing this larger vision of a more interconnected and efficient national railway system.

The railway company advises all affected commuters to plan their journeys accordingly and explore other transportation options during the suspension period. Commuters are encouraged to monitor official PNR channels for real-time updates and advisories.

Updates regarding the progress of the repairs and the exact resumption date of services will be announced by the PNR as they become available. The PNR expressed gratitude for the public's understanding.
