TAYABAS CITY, Quezon – The Tayabas City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), in collaboration with Wildlife Matters, successfully conducted a comprehensive Snake Awareness and Handling Training aimed at equipping local government personnel and private organizations with essential knowledge and skills for safe snake encounters and snakebite management.
The training was spearheaded by Jazz Torres Ong and Kyle Anadeo Tamayo of Wildlife Matters, renowned experts in wildlife education. Their expertise provided participants with crucial insights into various aspects of snake awareness, including snake identification, snake behaviors, and vital first aid procedures for snakebites. The program also emphasized crucial do's and don'ts when encountering snakes in various environments.
A significant highlight of the training was the actual demonstration of proper snake handling techniques. Participants were shown how to safely manage non-venomous snakes, specifically a Reticulated Python (sawa) and a Philippine Brown Rat Snake. This hands-on segment provided invaluable practical experience, complementing the theoretical knowledge shared during the lectures.
The training saw active participation from one hundred individuals, divided into two batches, representing various local government units and private organizations. Attendees included personnel from the Tayabas Local Government Unit (LGU), the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), and numerous Barangay Officials, underscoring the community-wide commitment to responsible wildlife interaction.
This initiative by Tayabas CENRO and Wildlife Matters is a proactive step towards fostering a safer community by promoting understanding and dispelling misconceptions about snakes, ultimately reducing the risks associated with snake encounters.
