SARIAYA, Quezon – To be ready when it matters most, Sariaya's local government, led by Mayor Marivic Gayeta and Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) head Sinforoso Martinez Jr., recently organized simultaneous Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) demonstrations. These sessions provided residents with vital emergency skills, aligning with this year's Department of Health (DOH) theme, "Save a Life with CPR," to highlight CPR's importance.
This initiative, part of the nationwide National CPR Week celebrations, aims to instill essential CPR knowledge in every Filipino for emergencies like cardiac arrest. Such widespread capability is vital for increasing survival rates across the country, underscoring the belief that ordinary citizens can become first responders and potentially save lives.
MDRRMO Chief Sinforoso Martinez Jr. emphasized the role of CPR in emergency situations, stating, "Every second counts when someone collapses from cardiac arrest. Our goal today is to empower our community with the basic knowledge and skills of CPR, because anyone can be a lifesaver. This isn't just about professional responders; it's about equipping ordinary citizens to make an extraordinary difference."
During the demonstrations, MDRRMO Chief Sinforoso Martinez Jr. personally described and illustrated the correct techniques for performing CPR to the participants. Through clear instruction and practical exercises, he guided them through the steps, ensuring they understood the critical actions needed in a life-threatening situation.
"You don't need to be a medical expert to perform CPR. Even basic chest compressions can significantly increase a person's chances of survival," he added, underscoring the straightforward nature of the life-saving skill. "We urge everyone to take these lessons to heart and be ready to act when the unexpected happens."
One needs to kneel and put their hands on the center of the other person’s chest, along an imaginary nipple line, with one hand on top of the other. The shoulders of the person performing CPR should also be perpendicular to the chest of the person receiving CPR.
However, he clarified that the public should first seek help before performing any CPR. He added that it is essential to perform a high-quality CPR on a victim, with the correct speed at 100 to 120 compressions per minute, and the proper depth of 2 inches to 5 centimeters.
Meanwhile, Mayor Marivic Gayeta in her speech emphasized the local government's strong commitment to emergency preparedness. "Our commitment to emergency preparedness is not just a promise; it's an active investment in the safety and well-being of every Sariayahin," she said.
"Accidents can happen to anyone, anywhere, at any time. Our readiness to administer initial aid can truly make a significant difference in saving lives during emergencies. Each trained individual becomes a vital link in our chain of survival, transforming bystanders into lifesavers," she added.
Several local government employees also participated in the CPR initiative, simultaneously working on the Formulation of LDIP 2026-2028 and AIP 2026. This dual engagement ensured that practical, life-saving skills gained from the training are directly integrated into the municipality's long-term development and disaster preparedness strategies.
