TAYABAS CITY, Quezon - After facing significant setbacks from crop pests and the loss of their animals, 87 farmers in Tayabas City received a much-needed lifeline in the form of indemnity checks. The payout, totaling over P424,000, was distributed by the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation-Regional Office 4 on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, offering welcome relief to the farmers who had lost livestock and had their crops destroyed.
Tayabas City Mayor Anthony “Kuya Piwa” Lim personally attended the event to show his support for the city's farming community. In his address to the beneficiaries, Mayor Lim underscored the city government's commitment to its farmers, acknowledging the vital role agriculture plays in the local economy.
“Alam ko po na ang halos karamihan sa mga Tayabasin na ang kinabubuhay ay sa pagsasaka, ako po ay nag-atas sa aking mga kasama sa opisina na sa taong 2026 Annual Budget ay pina-dodoble ko po ang pondo para sa hanay ng mga magsasaka nang sa ganun ay mapakinabangan ng mga magsasaka dito sa Lungsod ng Tayabas." the mayor said.
The distribution of the checks was managed by PCIC representative Aljane Mharu Oabel, with assistance from the City Agriculture’s Office, led by City Agriculturist Rommel Abuyan. “The beneficiaries are registered under the Registry System for Basic Sectors in Agriculture (RSBSA),” Oabel explained, emphasizing that registration is free and serves as the basis for farmers to receive assistance from the Department of Agriculture (DA).
The PCIC, an agency under the DA, provides insurance coverage for registered farmers, with a maximum coverage of PHP16,000 per 1,000 square meters of crops and livestock. "Some farmers registered less than 1,000 square meters, so they received corresponding indemnity amounts ranging from PHP6,000 to PHP10,000," he added.
