ALABAT, Quezon — Alabat’s historic Leaning Tower of Parola, a coastal landmark for over a century, will finally undergo restoration. Generations of local fishermen have relied on it to navigate safely through the town’s waters, and it has long symbolized the resilience and spirit of the Alabatin community.

Mayor Eizelle “Ays” M. Avellano-Canimo recently shared the restoration plan on her official Facebook page, drawing excitement from residents and local stakeholders. Workers will use the Flagship Panama Tug Boat from China, a large barge capable of handling heavy structures, to carefully straighten and reinforce the tower while keeping its historic character intact.

Built during the American colonial period in the early 1900s, the tower served as a vital guide along the coastline. Its slightly leaning shape makes it both a practical tool for sailors and a recognizable cultural icon that captures the attention of locals and visitors alike.

Powerful storms, including Typhoon Rosing with its fierce winds and relentless waves, have tested the tower over the decades, challenging its structure but never toppling it. The tower’s resilience reflects the determination of the people of Alabat, who have always looked to it as a symbol of hope and safety.

The restoration brings together the Alabat Coast Guard, the town’s Engineering Department, the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, and skilled local divers. Mayor Avellano-Canimo, known as the “diving mother” of Alabat, may personally oversee the operation to ensure every task proceeds with care.

The community celebrates the tower in festivals, school programs, and storytelling events that highlight its history and maritime traditions. Residents and visitors share stories and photos that connect generations to the town’s heritage.

Tourists visit the tower not just to see its famous lean but to experience the story it tells — one of perseverance, community pride, and unshakable hope. Once restored, it will continue guiding fishermen and welcoming visitors, preserving Alabat’s cultural heritage and inspiring pride for generations to come.
