MAUBAN, Quezon - Driven by the goal of protecting residents from frequent floods, the local government of Mauban is intensifying disaster prevention efforts that target the town’s most vulnerable areas. Mayor Erwin “Ninong” Pastrana is leading major infrastructure projects designed to safeguard homes, roads, and key community facilities from heavy rains and overflowing waterways.

Mayor Pastrana recently met with officials of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Quezon 1st District Engineering Office to discuss ongoing and future flood-control plans. The meeting aligned local and national efforts to ensure more effective coordination and timely implementation of infrastructure projects in the municipality.

According to Mayor Pastrana, collaboration with DPWH ensures faster implementation and higher-quality results for the town’s flood prevention and urban development programs. He emphasized that national and local teamwork is essential to building a stronger and more resilient Mauban capable of handling extreme weather.

One major project constructs a Drainage Line Canal along St. Bonaventure Street and Gomez Street leading directly to the Gat Uban seawall. The canal, measuring 1.2 meters in both depth and width, is designed to redirect stormwater faster and prevent flooding in residential and commercial areas in the town center.

“This new canal will help reduce flooding in our town center, especially during strong typhoons and heavy rainfall, it is one of our top priorities to improve public safety and convenience for all Maubanin while protecting local businesses and daily traffic.” Mayor Pastrana said.

The first phase of the Drainage Line Canal Project begins in November under close supervision of the Municipal Engineering Office and experienced field engineers. Workers start along Gomez Street and extend toward the seawall, focusing first on sections that experience the heaviest flooding during the rainy season to ensure early impact.

Another key project addresses the needs of low-lying communities that frequently experience water accumulation. The Water and Mud Catch Basin Project in Barangay Lual Poblacion collects stormwater and silt from higher areas before it reaches residential streets and critical infrastructure.

Mayor Pastrana said the project minimizes flooding along residential streets and protects drainage systems from clogging during strong rains. The catch basin also slows water flow during heavy rainfall, reducing pressure on nearby canals and helping prevent property damage in adjacent areas.

He said the municipal government fully funds the project through local disaster and infrastructure funds to guarantee timely completion. The engineering team has conducted early site inspections and surveys to ensure proper design, location, and construction safety standards.

“We are using local funds wisely and efficiently to make sure every initiative counts, “every peso is invested in long-term solutions that will benefit not just the present generation but also future Maubanin residents.” the mayor added.

The local government maintains strict oversight of all project activities to ensure quality and adherence to schedules. Officials release regular progress reports to keep residents informed about developments, construction timelines, and expected project completion dates.

“These are long-term investments for the safety of our people and the progress of our town, we are committed to building a stronger and more resilient Mauban through responsible infrastructure development and good governance that benefits every community member.” he emphasized.

Vice Mayor Alween Sardea and the Sangguniang Bayan support these programs fully and actively monitor implementation. They pledged to coordinate with barangay officials and oversee construction activities to ensure smooth, safe, and uninterrupted project progress.

Mayor Pastrana urged residents to cooperate and observe discipline while the projects continue across the municipality. “I ask for your patience and understanding as these projects are implemented,” he said. “With everyone’s support, we can make Mauban safer, more prepared for future storms, and better equipped to handle extreme weather.”

These efforts reflect Mauban’s long-term vision for sustainable urban development and climate resilience. The municipal government focuses on building a cleaner, safer, and more flood-resilient community that will serve generations of residents to come.
