Lopez MENRO teams inspect key waterways as the municipality steps up its pollution-tracking efforts.(LOPEZ LGU)
LOPEZ, Quezon — Determine the current condition and cleanliness of the Lalaguna Marshland, Talolong River, and Bocboc Creek — this is the focus of the latest water quality testing and monitoring in Lopez, Quezon. Conducted by the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO), the activity forms part of the town’s ongoing effort to track the health of its major waterways.
MENRO chief ENP Chariz Montero led the assessment, which forms part of the municipality’s regular environmental monitoring efforts. She said the testing helps establish updated baseline data that the local government can use for future environmental planning.
The MENRO team inspected each site to document visible conditions and identify potential pollution sources along the waterways. Combining field observations with laboratory testing allows for a clearer and more accurate assessment of the marshland, river, and creek.
Personnel collected water samples to analyze chemical and physical indicators that may signal contamination or ecological stress. These samples were immediately delivered to the Regional Standards and Testing Laboratory (RSTL) of DOST Region IV-A in Los Baños, Laguna for full laboratory evaluation.
Mayor Isaias B. Ubana II said the initiative supports Lopez’s broader effort to protect local resources and uphold national environmental standards. He emphasized that maintaining clean waterways is essential for agriculture, household use, and ecological stability.
Mayor Ubana said the testing comes at a time when many Philippine waterways face pressures from waste disposal, agricultural runoff, and pollution. He added that the results will help determine whether Lopez’s rivers and marshlands remain safe for community use and long-term sustainability.
The findings are expected to guide the municipality in addressing possible pollution sources and strengthening local water-management strategies. The data will also help shape conservation initiatives and public health measures.
