LOPEZ, Quezon — Bringing reproductive health discussions into the classroom, Magallanes National High School recently hosted a Teenage Pregnancy Symposium in Lopez, Quezon. More than 500 students took part in discussions on early pregnancy and adolescent health.
The Municipal Health Office led the symposium as part of its school-based health education efforts. Health workers provided clear and age-appropriate information to help students better understand the issue.
According to reports, teenage pregnancy remains a continuing public health concern due to its impact on maternal health, school completion, and long-term economic stability. Local initiatives increasingly focus on early education to address information gaps and guide adolescents before risky behavior occurs.
The activity aimed to raise awareness of teenage pregnancy and its common causes. Discussions also explained how early pregnancy can affect health, education, and long-term opportunities.
Municipal Health Officer Dr. Paolo Villafañe served as one of the resource persons during the sessions. He stressed responsible decision-making, accurate reproductive health knowledge, and the importance of self-respect and informed choices.
Public Health Nurse Mrs. Laila Mique, RN, also addressed the students during the symposium. She shared practical guidance on preventing early pregnancy, maintaining adolescent health, and accessing available counseling and support services.
Municipal Mayor Isaias B. Ubana II expressed support for school-based health education initiatives addressing teenage pregnancy. He said the local government will continue programs aimed at protecting the health and future of the youth in Lopez.
