TRECE MARTIRES, Cavite (PIA) —A Php 960 billion infrastructure project to build an airport and seaport in Sangley point is being considered by a new venture group. The consortium is headed by the Solar Group and is now joined by Belle Corp., (subsidiary of Henry Sy’s SM Group) — All-Asia Resources and Reclamation Corporation and other companies such as Flugfahen Munich (operator of Munich Airport). The proposed project will be competing with the earlier planned $10 billion (Php480 billion) project by Ramon Ang in 2014 near Manila Bay and is now being reviewed by the investment coordinating committee of the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA). The plan is to reclaim land near the naval base in Sangley point with a total area of about 2,500 hectares south of Manila, as the Philippine capital struggles to cope with a rising number of flights and increasing road traffic. The proposed airport will have a dual runway system with estimated cost of Php100 billion and a railway project that will connect this project to the NAIA network so passengers can easily transfer from one terminal to the other. Edmundo Lim, the venture’s vice-chairman stressed the importance of building a new port and special economic zone that would help ease traffic in Manila. Between 6,000 and 7,000 vehicles a day travel between the Manila port and industrial sites and the airport is used by about 40,000 vehicles a day, Lim added. He also said that this big project could take about five years to build. “This is such a big a project, and we need big muscles,” Lim said by phone. “We are still open to other partners because this project is no joke and it has many components for interested investors.” President Duterte has so-far signaled plans to pursue infrastructure projects and to accelerate implementation.
