LUCENA CITY, Quezon - Around 500 people from different sectors in the Province of Quezon gathered for the 2017 ASEAN Multi-Sectoral Forum organized by the Philippine Information Agency CALABARZON (PIA-4A) held at the Pacific Mall Lucena last September 7.

Participants learned about the role of PIA in the promotion of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the Tourism in the ASEAN Region, and the Gender and Development (GAD) efforts for ASEAN integration.

“To show our genuine cooperation, we were closely working together hand in hand and consistently collaborate with PIA CALABARZON to further promote and uphold the rights, welfare, and interest of the communities we are both serving,” Pacific Mall Lucena Manager Kata Jabrica said as she welcomed the organizer and participants to their mall which served as the venue for the purposeful event.

PIA Regional Director Ma. Cristina C. Arzadon explained that under the ASEAN integration, we are not only Filipino citizens but are also ASEAN citizens along with the nine other member countries such as the Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

“Marami pang opportunities na nakalaan sa bawat citizens ng ASEAN kaya nga po nandito yung ating other government agencies para ipaliwanag sa inyo ang maaari nating ma generate na benepisyo mula sa ASEAN Integration,” she said.

As one of the Speakers, PIA-4A Assistant Regional Director (ARD) Carlo Gonzaga discussed the Agency’s role in the ASEAN information drive and promotional activities of the current Administration, which is its incumbent Chair.

An audio-visual presentation of the history of ASEAN was first presented by ARD Gonzaga. “Ang pinakabuod po kaya naitatag ang ASEAN ay yung sinasabi nga na para mapanatili yung pagkakapantay-pantay at kapayapaan sa rehiyon ng Association of Southeast Asian Nations,” he explained.

He introduced PIA and explained that the Agency, under the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO), is tasked to promote ASEAN as this year is its 50th Founding Anniversary, as well as to increase awareness among the Filipinos on what ASEAN is all about.

ARD Gonzaga also enumerated the efforts initiated by PIA in relation to the promotion of ASEAN and government projects and programs, such as the utilization of social media, production of audio-visual presentations, and the conduct of events like press conference called “Kapihan,” Barangay Fora, Youth Fora, and Multi-Sectoral Fora.

Department of Tourism Region IV-A (DOT IV-A) Tourism Operation Officer Marvin Malacaman tackled Tourism in the ASEAN Region. He said that 4 out of 5 ASEAN travelers no longer travel for luxury but now for necessity.

In mapping out the two dimensions namely: behavior and motivation, four distinct types of ASEAN travelers were determined, such as the explorer, follower, connector, and opportunist.

An explorer treats traveling as something that helps them grow as an individual. The follower, on the other hand, prioritizes the interest of their companion ahead of their own and hire travel agencies for itineraries. While, the connectors are “well-seasoned travelers” in contrast to the explorers and usually share travel experiences in social media. Finally, the opportunists are the smallest group and has the highest potential for high spending. They were said to travel at the right time, in the right place and with the right people.

Furthermore, he discussed the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC).

“AEC aims to integrate the Southeast Asia, all of its 10 member-states, to become a single market of 625 million people and combined gross domestic product of 2.5 trillion US dollars in 2014,” Malacaman emphasized.

“We should know who we are, so that we would know what we could offer and how we could offer it; we should leverage on digital media by generating more information; we should know our statistics and create a positive image of the Philippines; we should have a customized strategy for each group or cluster; we should work on our cultural identity to stand out to know what is unique of every destination and of course, we should be tourist responsible,” he said, enumerating how to minimize and alter some negative impressions of tourists in the country in terms of security, poverty incidence, and traffic situation.

The last Speaker, Provincial Gender and Development – Quezon (PGAD Quezon) Community Affairs Officer Carol Lanceta, talked about enhancing gender and mainstreaming efforts and initiatives for ASEAN Integration.

“Ito po ay isang developmental perspective, isang proseso kung saan dapat magsulong tayo ng participative at empowering approaches, ibig sabihin dapat po parehong lalaki at babae ay naririnig ang boses,” she said as she explained what GAD is. In GAD, the needs and rights of both men and women are equally upheld, she stressed.

She also presented the status of gender equality in the ASEAN’s 10 member countries. The Philippines ranked 7th in the whole world and 1st in Southeast Asia in terms of promoting and practicing gender equality and development; while, Myanmar ranked the least among the ASEAN members but still not included in the 10 worst countries in terms of GAD.

“Masaya po tayo na wala po doon sa 10 worst countries for gender equality ang ating sampung ASEAN Member countries,” she exclaimed.

She admitted that there are still a lot of works to do to strengthen and promote gender and development among the members of the ASEAN. Nevertheless, the good thing is each ASEAN member implements various GAD mainstreaming initiatives that had resulted to conspicuous developmental changes.

The ASEAN multi-sectoral forum is one of the lined-up activities of PIA-4A in promoting ASEAN within the CALABARZON region for this year. Same forums were already conducted in Batangas and Laguna. (GG/JG, PIA4A)
