ALTER subsidiary gets ERC nod to connect Alabat Wind Power to Luzon Grid

ALABAT, Quezon – More reliable power and new opportunities are on the horizon for the municipalities of Alabat and Quezon in Quezon province, as a new wind power project has secured approval to connect to the Luzon grid. The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) granted approval for Alternergy Holdings Corporation (ALTER) to connect its facility, paving the way for a more reliable energy source and potential community benefits.

ALTER announced today, August 4, 2025 that its subsidiary, Alabat Wind Power Corporation (AWPC), is now authorized to develop a transmission facility. This includes a substation at the wind farm site and a 37-kilometer transmission system from Alabat to Lopez, Quezon. The line will connect to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines' (NGCP) existing 69kV Gumaca-Tagkawayan-Lopez transmission line.

“This is another significant milestone achieved, bringing us closer to completing the Alabat Wind Power Project,” AWPC president Gerry Magbanua said. “With this approval, AWPC reaffirms our goal of promoting environmental stewardship through the development of renewable energy resources and supporting our host communities while ensuring a reliable and efficient energy supply to the grid.”

The company’s commitment to the project’s progress was recently highlighted by a visit from Alternergy President Gerry Magbanua to the site to personally assess the construction. His inspection coincided with a major milestone for the 64-megawatt wind farm: the delivery of the first two of eight planned wind turbines.

During his visit, Magbanua affirmed the project's positive impact on the island's local economy and quality of life. The initiative is expected to provide new employment and educational opportunities for residents, while also generating new tax revenues for the host municipalities.

With an estimated cost of PHP 7 billion, the Alabat Wind Power Project is a landmark undertaking for the region. As the first of its kind in Quezon province and the first in the country to be located along the Pacific Ocean coastline, the 64-megawatt project is set to be completed by the end of 2025.

It will also be the first wind installation to be commissioned under the Department of Energy's second Green Energy Auction Program. The program aims to boost the country’s renewable energy share to 35% by 2030, securing long-term power supply agreements for winning bidders.

The Alabat Wind Power Project is one of five initiatives currently under construction, a key part of ALTER's strategic plan to increase its capacity to 500 megawatts by 2026. The project will not only contribute to the national energy supply but is also expected to have a direct impact on the development and sustainability of its host municipalities.
