LUCENA CTIY, Quezon - A Facebook video clip from a Sangguniang Panlalawigan session has sparked backlash, prompting a clarification on remarks about Ahtisa Manalo’s homecoming. The clip quickly gained rapid attention as viewers scrutinized the exchange shown in the session.

In the video, Board Member John Joseph Aquivido reports on preparations for the December 5 celebration when Vice Governor Anacleto “Third” Alcala III asks, “Kasama po ba tayo [sa parada]” “bakit nanalo po ba tayo?” The remarks drew criticism online after some viewers interpreted them as dismissive of Manalo’s achievement.

Provincial officials noted that the remarks were light and self-referential, stressing they were not directed at Manalo’s accomplishment. They said Alcala was referring to himself and other board members to emphasize that the homecoming parade should highlight Manalo, not elected officials.

The controversy spread on Facebook as users questioned the tone of the exchange and its timing ahead of the province’s celebration. Officials countered that the remarks were self-deprecating and meant to underline that only Manalo deserved the spotlight.

One Facebook user noted that public statements made during live government sessions are highly visible and easily interpreted in different ways. The user added that Manalo’s success is a source of pride for the province and that remarks perceived as dismissive can send the wrong message.

In an official statement, the Office of the Vice Governor said there was no intent “na bastusin o umapak sa tagumpay” of Manalo. The office confirmed ongoing preparations for the parade and for the awarding of a Provincial Resolution recognizing her Miss Universe performance.

The homecoming has drawn strong interest, as Manalo’s Miss Universe finish is the highest for a Filipina in years and a point of pride for Candelaria. The provincial government says the celebration aims to unite residents and highlight a rare international achievement for Quezon.

The provincial board reaffirmed its congratulations to Manalo and said the clarification aims to prevent further misunderstanding of the remarks. Thousands of residents are expected to join the homecoming parade, which the province considers a tribute to Manalo’s international achievement.
